Part 1: Overview

The University's Performance Management and Development (PM&D) program is the overarching process for the planning and assessment of both performance and development needs throughout the life cycle of a staff member, including:

  • Probation
  • Confirmation (academic staff only)
  • Incremental progression
  • Performance progression and recognition (general staff only)
  • Performance Bonus

Eligibility

It is mandatory that all supervisors conduct an annual PM&D program. No organisational unit or staff member is exempt from conducting PM&D

PM&D applies to all staff on probation, full-time and part-time staff on continuing appointments and staff on fixed-term contracts of a period greater than 12 months, without exemption.

PM&D also applies to staff on contracts of less than 12 months where those contracts are extensions of previous contracts, the combined duration of which is more than 12 months.

The performance of casual staff may be assessed in accordance with the PM&D Program for the purposes of determining their suitability for re-engagement (whether as a casual staff member or otherwise) and applications for conversion.

Aims and benefits

The main aims and benefits of the PM&D process are to:

  • plan your performance consistent with the strategic goals of the University
  • gain a good understanding and definition of roles, responsibilities, capability and anticipated achievements through self-assessment and feedback
  • improve the effectiveness of communication between supervisors and staff
  • plan professional development and support for performance
  • assist staff to realise their potential, achieve their aspirations and recognise excellence
  • promote the development and maintenance of a positive, productive and harmonious work environment, and
  • develop mutual trust, respect and understanding between staff and their supervisor.
